464 Gallery is pleased to present ART IS DEAD, an exhibition of new paintings by artist Chuck Tingley. The opening reception of ART IS DEAD will be held at 464 and Blink Galleries on Friday, April 22, 2011 from 6-11 pm. The exhibit will be on display through April 28, 201...1 and is free and open to the public.
Working in mixed media on canvas, Chuck Tingley combines abstraction, figuration, and elements of both painting and stencil to create distinctly contemporary works. His robust approach uses a range of techniques including hand cut stencils, acrylics, and spray paint. On many of the paintings, below the active surface is a collage of political and social critique, revealing society’s contemporary mores.
Tingley draws inspiration from street art and its effect on viewers, sending a political, social, or cultural message that creates dialogue. The artist suggests that a revolution is needed to awaken a dying society in America.
